rebound_MIDI

A kinetic multi-channel MIDI sequencer for monome norns, deeply integrated with the KORG volca drum (and fully customizable for any external synthesizer or DAW).

Based on the original rebound by Andrew Gerrand (@nf).

About

rebound_MIDI expands the original kinetic bouncing-orb sequencer into a full-fledged groove and melodic workstation.

Each bouncing orb is mapped to one of 6 configurable instrument slots. While originally tuned for the 6-part multi-channel architecture of the KORG volca drum, it also features a Generic Synth Mode where each slot can trigger any MIDI channel (1–16) for polyphonic synthesizers or drum racks.

Key Enhancements

  • Volca Drum Mode (Default: ON):
    • Slot 1 (Kick): Pitch locked to 0 for a deep sub-kick, while norns' internal PolyPerc engine plays musical basslines constrained to C1–B1.
    • Slot 2–6 (Percussion & Tonal FX): Automatically harmonizes notes to 3rd or 5th intervals above the root note, controlling the volca drum's pitch via CC 28.
    • Velocity & Drive Mapping: Orb speed dynamically modulates MIDI velocity and volca drum's Drive (CC 51).
    • Corner Rolls: Wall bounces near screen corners trigger volca drum's Slice (CC 49) for rapid drum rolls.
    • Waveguide Resonator Sync: The volca drum's physical modeling resonator tuning (CC 56) follows the chord progression automatically.
  • Orb Collision & Glitch Slice:
    • Orbs physically bounce off one another upon collision, triggering a burst of Bit Reduction (CC 52) and a crash accent (Slot 6), with a 30% chance of a tempo-synced 3-hit slice roll.
  • Gravity Physics:
    • Real-time gravity acceleration turns linear bounces into bouncy, humanized ping-pong grooves.
  • Live Performance Tools:
    • Roll Freeze (Stutter): Instantly freezes all motion and loops the last-played notes in an ultra-fast 32nd-note beat-repeat.
    • Kick Mute: Instantly drop out the kick drum for breakdowns.
  • Dedicated Multi-Channel Visual LFO Page (Page 2):
    • 6 independent LFOs (Release, Pitch, Level, Pan) with selectable waveforms (Square, Sine, Triangle, Saw, Random) and a real-time animated oscilloscope display.
    • Slot 1 defaults to a Square LFO on EG Release (CC 25), rhythmically alternating between tight punchy kicks and booming long-decay 808-style kicks.
  • Automated Pop Chord Progression:
    • Seamlessly cycles through classic chord movements (I - V - vi - IV) quantized to any selected musical scale.

Controls

Switch to this page via Key 1 + Key 3.

Control Action
Enc 1 Select Slot / Channel (Slot 1–6)
Enc 2 Select Parameter (Target, Shape, Rate, Depth, Base)
Enc 3 Adjust parameter value
Key 1 + Key 3 Return to ORBS page
  • Target: off, release (CC 25), pitch (CC 28), level (CC 19), pan (CC 10)
  • Shape: square, sine, triangle, saw, random
  • Rate: 0.1 Hz – 20.0 Hz

Parameters Menu

Under the norns PARAMETERS menu, you can configure:

  • MIDI Setup:
    • midi out device: Select target USB MIDI device (1–16).
    • volca drum mode: Toggle between on (volca drum specific CCs & tuning) and off (generic chromatic synth mode).
    • slot 1–6 midi ch: Individually assign MIDI output channels for each slot (Default: 1–6).
  • Performance & Physics:
    • 3rd vs 5th (5th %): Balance ratio between 3rd and 5th intervals in volca drum mode.
    • resonator chord sync: Automatically retunes volca drum Waveguide Resonator to current chord root.
    • orb collision FX: Enable/disable physical orb collisions and glitch slices.
    • gravity power: Set gravity strength.
  • Auto Chord Progression:
    • auto chord: Turn automated progression on / off.
    • chord change sec: Set duration per chord bar (1.0s – 16.0s).
  • Scale & Engine:
    • Scale root, scale mode, clock division, and PolyPerc synth controls (Cutoff, Amp, Gain, LFO).

Setup with KORG volca drum

  1. Connect your volca drum to norns via USB MIDI (using a USB-MIDI interface cable) or through a USB MIDI host.
  2. In the norns parameters menu, ensure midi out device matches your interface.
  3. Ensure the volca drum is set to its default Split MIDI Channel Mode (Part 1–6 listening to MIDI Channels 1–6).
  4. Watch and listen as Part 1 serves as your kick/sub-bass, while Parts 2–6 generate tuned percussive harmonies synced to the progression!
